Modern Weather Forecasting

Learn to recognize the early signs of changing weather; how to anticipate storms, squalls, fog, and wind shifts; and become familiar with basic weather elements and how they affect your boating experience. This seminar will cover the basics of weather and how it can be forecast, and presents many of the tools of modern forecasting that let you have confidence in planning your voyage.

Marine Navigation on both Electronic and Paper Charts

This course will give you the skills you need to get where you’re going using charts and marine electronics as well as a knowledge of winds, currents, and tides. Especially in our waters, with hazards posed by rocks, tides and currents, knowing where to go and how to get there is essential. The course will include:
It will be possible to purchase a set of navigation tools needed for the course, or you may purchase on-line or at any marine store. Let us know if you wish to purchase the dividers for $15 and plotter for $10.

Advanced Powerboat Handling - Close Quarter Maneuvering

Look like a pro. Protect your boat, your passengers, and yourself with the docking/undocking skills you need.
Docking can be one of the most stressful tasks you can perform, especially if you are a new boater. Learn how to control your boat at slow speed in close proximity to other boats and fixed objects. Learn how to approach the dock in a variety of conditions and safely secure your boat. Learn how to depart the dock in any situation. Understand the use of spring lines, how to safely fend off, and other techniques. With the knowledge you'll gain in this seminar, coupled with your on-the-water practice, your confidence in docking and slow-speed maneuvering will increase and your boating will be both safer and more enjoyable.

Boat Handling 1 Rules of the Road (Recording)

Learn how to handle your boat in a variety of situations and become the skipper you want to be. Gain confidence in docking, underway, anchoring, and other seamanship skills.
This recording of Session 1 delves deeply into the Rules of the Road, with emphasis on COLREGS that apply in international waters, including all of Puget Sound, the Salish Sea and connected waters. As a skipper, you must know the rules; there is no other option.

Boat Handling 3 - Anchoring with Assurance (Recording)

The Anchoring session has been prepared to assist boaters in understanding the issues and problems involving the theories of anchor weight, the methods used to anchor, and the choices of anchor types for the area of boating. The slides and notations on anchoring are intended to raise awareness of the need for correct anchor choices and the mechanics of proper anchoring techniques. The knowledge gained from completing this session will increase the student’s understanding of the conditions and situations involved in anchoring a boat and the need for a proper anchor choice.

Boat Handling 4 - Handling Your Boat Underway (Recording)

This recorded session is designed to cover the basic challenges and the techniques to meet them when your boat is underway, in order to give you confidence that you can anticipate what is likely to occur, and to have the skills to deal with it. We will cover basic steering, steering a range, trimming your boat, operating on a plane and the concept of hull speed, handling seas and waves and dealing with inlets and passes.
