Weather in our waters is variable, localized, sometimes dangerous, and difficult to predict. This seminar will cover weather basics and what is unique about the weather in the Salish Sea.
This seminar have been designed and presented by America’s Boating Club of the San Juan Islands (ABCSJI). Our club’s award-winning instructor, Ann Einboden, along with other ABCSJI club’s cruising experts, have been cruising these waters for many years and share with you the essentials and practical tips with emphasis on safety and fun for cruising this amazing area!

Tides & Currents in the Salish Sea

The Salish Sea features large tidal variations in complex patterns and has numerous channels and passes with strong currents. This seminar will show you how to predict and plan for navigating safely in these conditions.

Boat Handling - the complete course
with Ann Einboden
Learn how to handle your boat in a variety of situations and become the skipper you want to be. Gain confidence in docking, underway, anchoring, and other seamanship skills.
The price includes an e-book, plus On the Water Training in our small boats at no additional cost thanks to generous donors (normally a $195 value). The cost for members is $110.
The Boat Handling course is intended for newer recreational boaters who have completed a basic boating class (like America's Boating Course) and want to gain more knowledge, skill, and confidence to boat safely and have more fun in a variety of situations. Members who take and pass the final exam will receive the Advanced Grade of Seamanship. Some insurers may recognize this as a basis for setting premiums.
Boat Handling covers these topics:
The classes will take place on six Tuesday evenings starting March 31, 6:30 - 8:30 at the San Juan Islands Yacht Club. Hands-on training will take place on May 17th, 2026 at Roche Harbor. It will cover basic boat handling including departing the dock, docking, emergency stops, running a slalom, picking up overboard object, anchoring etc.
Well-equiped small boat with experienced instructors will lead small classes in 2-hour sessions. Each student practices all skills.

This recording of Session 1 delves deeply into the Rules of the Road, with emphasis on COLREGS that apply in international waters, including all of Puget Sound, the Salish Sea and connected waters. As a skipper, you must know the rules; there is no other option.

Learn how to maneuver your boat in close quarters, undocking and docking. This is one of the most stressful tasks you can perform in boating, especially if you are a new boater. There are tips and techniques that will help you master this important activity under many conditions operating near docks and other objects.
This recording of Session 2 presents a number of tips and techniques to help you perform these tasks with confidence and grace under pressure.

Boat Handling 3 - Anchoring with Assurance (Recording)

The Anchoring session has been prepared to assist boaters in understanding the issues and problems involving the theories of anchor weight, the methods used to anchor, and the choices of anchor types for the area of boating. The slides and notations on anchoring are intended to raise awareness of the need for correct anchor choices and the mechanics of proper anchoring techniques. The knowledge gained from completing this session will increase the student’s understanding of the conditions and situations involved in anchoring a boat and the need for a proper anchor choice.

Boat Handling 5 - Emergencies on Board (Recording)
