Comprehensive basic course covering all types of water craft, safety equipment, Coast Guard requirements, Aids to Navigation.  A passing grade on the exam leads to issuance of Washington State Boater Education Card.

If you join ABCSJI after the class, you get 18 months for price of 12.

Learn how to handle your boat in a variety of situations and become the skipper you want to be. Gain confidence in docking, underway, anchoring, and other seamanship skills.  

The price includes an e-book, plus On the Water Training in our small boats at no additional cost thanks to generous donors (normally a $195 value).  The cost for members is $75.  

The Boat Handling course is intended for newer recreational boaters who have completed a basic boating class (like America's Boating Course) and want to gain more knowledge, skill, and confidence to boat safely and have more fun in a variety of situations. Members who take and pass the final exam will receive the Advanced Grade of Seamanship. Some insurers may recognize this as a basis for setting premiums.

Boat Handling covers these topics:

• Boating with Confidence: Handling your boat under way
• Rules of the Road
• Anchoring with Assurance
• Docking and Undocking
• Emergencies on Board
• Knots and Line Handling

The classes will take place on six Tuesday evenings starting March 18, 6:30 - 8:30 at the San Juan Islands Yacht Club.  Hands-on training will take place on May 18 at Roche Harbor. It will cover basic boat handling including departing the dock, docking, emergency stops, running a slalom, picking up overboard object, anchoring etc.   

Well-equiped small boat with experienced instructors will lead small classes in 2-hour sessions.  Each student practices all skills.
