Hands-on training in basic boat handling including departing the dock, docking, emergency stops, running a slalom, picking up overboard object, anchoring etc.   

Well-equiped small boat with experienced instructors will lead small classes in 2-hour sessions.  Each student practices all skills.

There will be a 2-hour required class on Zoom on May 29th to prepare for all the sessions.  You will be contacted to schedule your session. 

The price includes the course electronic-book.  Members of ABClub and SJIYC receive a $100 discount.

This course will give you the skills you need to get where you’re going using charts and marine electronics as well as a knowledge of winds, currents, and tides.  Especially in our waters, with hazards posed by rocks, tides and currents, knowing where to go and how to get there is essential.  The course will include:

• Charts and their interpretation
• Landmarks and navigation aids (buoys, day marks, lights, etc.)
• Plotting courses and determining direction and distance
• The mariner's compass and converting between True and Magnetic
• Use of GPS - basic GPS displays and information they provide, setting up waypoints and routes, staying on a GPS course
• Pre-planning courses and entering them into the GPS
• Monitoring progress and determining position by both GPS and traditional techniques such as bearings and dead reckoning
• The "Seaman's Eye" - simple skills for checking that one is on course

It will be possible to purchase a set of navigation tools needed for the course, or you may purchase on-line or at any marine store.  Let us know if you wish to purchase the dividers for $15 and plotter for $10.

This class will be offered in person at SJIYC and on Zoom, although attendance in person is recommended due to the nature of the material.  Recordings will be available if you must miss a session.  Sessions will be 6:30-8:30 PM on Tuesdays starting September 10 and running through October 15.
